Development of players in formative stages

Like everything in this life, the formation of football coaches is basic to the proper performance of the profession. Many times, this is something that is not given the value it deserves from an external point of view. To give us an idea of the importance it has, we will put a simile in other contexts of life:

  • Who do we want to take care of our children when they are sick: a person who has graduated in medicine, or one who likes to become a doctor?
  • Who would prefer to be a teacher of mathematics to our children, a teacher with a master’s degree in the subject, or someone who just likes numbers but has no formation?

In sport, and specifically in our case in football, we should give the same value to the coach who invests time, money, effort and enthusiasm in training, although many times we do not do it because of ignorance.

It is evident then, that for a good development of the child as a player and as a person and having as objective the development of autonomous and intelligent players, it is necessary to have knowledge and mastery of certain aspects that throughout our studies and experiences have demonstrated that they are essential in the performance of the trainer in formative stages.

Formación Fútbol Base

These 4 key pillars are the following:

1. Planning and Programming

We can not afford to train the contents that we feel with our players, without taking into account any criteria and guiding us only by our instinct.

To know WHAT to train in each moment and in each group of players, it is essential to know the theories of cognitive development of the player, and to have strategies to identify in which stage each of them is located establishing a criterion based on relating the player to the game.

This will allow us to understand what training contents our players can understand, and WHEN we should train them. This way, we will avoid falling into the error of wanting to teach them something they already dominate, or something they are not yet able to internalize.

2. Methodology

Another key pillar in the development of our players in formative stages is the methodology used, or HOW to train our players.

For this, it will be essential to know what kind of tasks facilitate the development of certain content, how the coach should address its players, what teaching styles exist and at what time of the task we use each one, in what way we can individualize and customize player training, introduction and value work through football, etc.

All this, always thinking about adapting the game to the child, and not the child to the game.

3. Physical Preparation

Another basic pillar in the development of the player, since it is not only important to develop the player at a cognitive level, but also at a physical level.

It is very important then, to know the bases of the motor development of the player according to his stage of maturation, and all the strategies that we have available for a correct and healthy development of our players, with the aim always to provide a solid base to the player who allows to execute effectively and efficiently all those actions in the situations to which it is continually subjected during the game.

4. Analysis of the game

Finally, it is not only important to know all these aspects of the training, apply them and hopefully expect them to be paying off, but have constant evaluation tools that allow us to be sure about what is being trained and how it is being trained. is doing, is paying off.

This is very important to know how to analyze it both individually (player) and at a collective level (team), and not fall into the common error of evaluating the learning of our players solely based on results of the weekend matches. This ability is what really goes to ensure that we are on the right track, and that our players are in good hands.
