If we review the game systems of the teams that have dominated the biggest leagues in the world in recent years, we will see that a clear pattern is not identified. In other words, in recent years there have been winners of important competitions that have been organized in very different ways and valid all of them.

From this reflection, we deduce the first reflection: There is no one system that is better or worse than another. What brings a team closer to success, is the fit of its players according to their individual and collective characteristics, in a determined game system, which by the organization of its players encourages or helps to exploit talent and helps to diminish the weak points of the team.

Even so, there have always been trends. As in any other area of ​​life, it is very common to see what the teams that dominate the game do the most, and try to get ideas to carry out in our own teams.

• In the 80s, the P-4-4-2 system was one of the most used, seen in the Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan in its maximum splendor.
• Later on, the P-4-3-3 gained weight, used by teams like Guardiola’s FCB, which won all possible titles in a golden age.
• In recent years many teams and national teams have appeared that use very well the P-3-5-2, which seemed to appear with Johan Cruyff in FCB, later Conte’ Juve who also took him to the Italian team and who now practice very well Setién’s Betis, Emery’s Arsenal, or Hoffenheim of Nagelsmann. In the World Cup, it was also seen in the England of Southgate or in the Belgium of Robert Martínez.

Then that system can be translated into a structure of 1-3-5-2 in the beginning phase of the game, and a 1-3-3-4 in the finishing zone. Or it can also be a 1-5-3-2 in a low block defense phase, and a 1-3-2-3-2 in a high block pressure phase.

In addition, each of the principles and sub-principles of the game (specific behaviors of players in a situation marked by the game model) in each phase and moment, may vary according to the players who interpret it. The behavior after loss in this organization will not be the same if I play with big forwards like Lukaku or Kane, that if I’m talking about fast strikers like Aubameyang or Sterling.

What then are “a priori” the characteristics of the 1-3-5-2 trendy system?
