The Pressure on the Starting of the Game

One of the most frequently asked questions for the coaching staff in the preparation of a game plan, and that make us go around the head to make sure 100% that it will work out, is how to press the starting of the opponent’s game ( in case the team has a high block defense game model).

+ Pressing the starting of the opponent’s game is always something precious if it is done well, since the fact of recovering the ball near the rival area gives you the possibility of generating danger with a few contacts ending.

– On the other hand, a risk situation is being assumed, since if the rival team manages to get rid of that high pressure by exceeding the first pressure lines, the defending team will have a lot of room to defend, and few troops to do so.

= This means that the majority of coaches study very well the way to do it, and even some of them give up posing it, waiting directly for the opponent in a middle block due to the risk involved or due to the search for a situation other than commented after ball recovery.

So, what should be taken into account when raising the pressure against the rival we face? We will try to comment on some of the keys:

  • Study the structure adopted by the rival. Something very important and basic, is to know the organization of the rival team on the pitch at that stage and moment of the game in particular (which will surely be different from the structure of this same team under Construction or Completion).
  • Be clear about my structure in that high pressure, and study if there is any variation in it to ensure a good collective pressure taking into account the structure of the opponent and the characteristics of my players. What players we jump to, what players we set free, etc.
  • Identify the weak demarcation. There is always a player involved in the beginning of the game that has less ability to get the ball clean, either by its characteristics, by playing a changed profile, etc. Important to consider where we invite to go to the opponent and then corner.
  • Decide if we seek to steal in center lane or side lane. This will depend a lot on the previous point, and on the idea of transition that we have afterwards, as well as the difficulty of executing one option or another in that defensive phase.
  • Study common mechanisms in the rival. This will give us an idea of what tactical intention the opponent will have in that ball outing. What movements and passes prioritize, in addition to knowing the level of risk they assume in that possible pressure from us. Do they risk balls or do they play long at minimum pressure?
  • Set the pressure stimulus well. High blood pressure is a collective aspect, not individual, therefore to ensure a good coordination at that start of pressure, it will be important to mark a stimulus that marks us when we jump. It can be after a back pass, pass from center to side, pass to the midfield, a bad control, after the signal of a team player …
  • What to look for if we recover the ball. We cannot train how to press up without training what game situations we look for quickly after stealing the ball in that area.
  • How to act if they exceed the first pressure line. Last but not least, it is essential to have trained how to act collectively in case of being overcome in that high pressure so that the rival does not take advantage of the action and generate a dangerous action. Which players fold back, which players have to do jockeying, if someone jumps to the ball player, etc.

The most beautiful thing about all this is that there is no universal way to do it, but that each game is a new challenge.
